Scope of Studies

Students are required to take a total of 42 credits (semester hours)

Schedule:

Thursdays – frontal studies at HAC from 11:00-18:00

Additional day – online studies from 18:00-21:00

During the first year of the program, students take courses in core subjects related to the functions of medical laboratories:

  • Integrative and Physiological Biochemistry
  • Clinical and Epidemiological Microbiology
  • Hematology
  • Pathology
  • Molecular Genetics
  • Quality Assurance and Risk Prevention in Medical Laboratories

These courses offer the student a foundation in the areas of science and research that are relevant to medical laboratories. A study of research innovation in these areas, as well as the resulting advances in diagnostics, provide the student with a broad and up-to-date basis in preparation for the second year of studies.

The program, which fast tracks students for managerial positions in medical laboratories, includes courses in the area of administration:

  • Principles of Management
  • Management of Medical Laboratories
  • Advanced course in group facilitation and group dynamics (an especially important subject as lab teams are composed of professionals from diverse backgrounds)

During the second year of studies, students take courses which focus on important and specialized aspects of medical laboratories. These courses focus on innovative scientific and research issues, with emphasis placed on diagnostics.

  • Embryology and Endocrinology of Human Fertility
  • Clinical Pharmacology and Toxicology
  • Clinical and Molecular Aspects of Cancer
  • Computational Genomics and the Genetic Basis of Diseases
  • Innovative Methods and Instrumentation in Medical and Laboratory Diagnostics

Over the two years, various elective courses are offered in various disciplines related to medical laboratories as well as in general subjects.

During the second year, students participate in a graduate seminar, in which they work independently on a novel scientific issue, read and comprehend the relevant literature, submit a seminar paper and deliver a lecture accompanied by a presentation.

The courses include a considerable bibliography in English. This is done in order to develop the students’ academic skills in English, the language in which most of the work in the lab is conducted, including reading, textual comprehension and analysis, information gathering, application and command of professional literature, presentation skills in English, expression and reflection of a critical approach, integration of information and in-depth thought.
