Glaucoma - Optometry and Vision Sciences

2 credits (3 ECTS Credits)

Introduction

Optometrists around the world are involved in glaucoma screening, detection, diagnosis, co-management, and treatment. The extent and level of involvement varies from the diagnosis and treatment of glaucoma in the USA; screening, monitoring, detection, and co-management in the UK; screening and referral for ophthalmologist care in many other countries.
It is important that any optometrist examining adult patients should have a thorough knowledge of the pathophysiology, signs, and principles of treatment of this disease which is one of the most common causes of blindness in the western world. It is estimated that, in the USA and the UK only half of the glaucomatous population is presently diagnosed.
A greater understanding of glaucoma by all eye care practitioners is essential if the incidence of blindness from this condition is to be reduced. This module will provide that in-depth understanding.

Course Structure

  • Weekly live 1½ hour lecture via Zoom (sessions are recorded to facilitate flexible study and review)

Learning Outcomes

At the successful completion of this course, students will be able to:

  1. Classify glaucomas based on optic nerve head appearance
  2. Identify normal and abnormal anterior segment appearance in slit lamp photographs and gonioscopy photographs
  3. Identify normal and abnormal visual field appearance
  4. Recognize visual field deficits that are specific to glaucoma
  5. Interpret findings of ocular coherence tomography and differentiate between normal and abnormal ocular coherence tomography and fundus appearance
  6. Identify the appearance of the retina in the presence of ocular hypertension
  7. Detail the signs, risks, and therapies for ocular hypertension
  8. Analyze and discuss presentation, diagnosis and management of case studies of patients with varying types of glaucoma

Instructor

Prof. Simon Barnard is a British optometrist (City University, 1976) with a PhD in the topic of eye movements (1999). He is a Fellow of the College of Optometrists, the American Academy of Optometry and the European Academy of Optometry. Prof. Barnard is the Director of Ocular Medicine at the Institute of Optometry in London, a past member of the Board of Optometric Examiners and Chairman of the Scope of Practice Committee of the European Council of Optometry and Optics. An independent prescriber, Professor Barnard has published over 30 clinical papers in journals or books and is the Co-Editor and Author of the textbook Paediatric Eye Care. He is also a co-inventor of the Volk Eye Check and a world renown lecturer in optometry.
